About the Department
The Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 2020. As one of the foremost and pioneering departments of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, it has played an instrumental role in advancing the university’s mission by fostering academic excellence in the field of agricultural economics, in accordance with the guidelines of the university and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The department has diligently contributed to the B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture degree program, offering students a comprehensive foundation in this vital discipline. Additionally, a student-ready program (SRP) further enhances the learning experience, ensuring that graduates are equipped to tackle the multifaceted challenges of the agricultural sector.
Since its inception in 2020, the department has expanded its offerings by introducing the M.Sc. (Ag.) in Agricultural Economics degree program. This advanced degree program provides a more in-depth and specialized study and research of agricultural economics, catering to the growing demands of the field.
The department started offering a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the academic year 2024-25. This advanced degree program offers a more in-depth and specialized study of agricultural economics and research, addressing the growing demands of the field with a focus on academic excellence, a comprehensive curriculum and a dedication to preparing students for the ever-evolving agricultural landscape, this department is a significant contributor to the university’s mission and the agricultural sector in the region.

The Department’s long term vision is to become an academic excellence center, offering students the opportunity to learn through real-world experiences in agriculture and related sectors. A crucial element of the long-term vision is to elevate the department to a School of Agri-business Management, encompassing related departments such as Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Finance and Agri-Business Management. This evolution will foster interdisciplinary cooperation in teaching, research, extension and training, resulting in comprehensive and meaningful outcomes that contribute to the advancement of the agricultural and agri-business sectors.
